Marrakech Holidays

For centuries, the Moroccan city of Marrakech has been attracting adventurous travellers with its mesmerising mix of tradition and modernity. Today, Marrakech remains one of the most vibrant holiday destinations for UK travellers and draws a diverse crowd, from families with young kids to couples looking to celebrate a special occasion. Blessed with a pleasant climate, a rich cultural heritage, and fascinating architecture, Marrakech makes for the perfect city break where the main things to do are explore the ins and outs of the city's buzzling souks (local markets) and watch life go by from a rooftop restaurant.

When to Go

Marrakech enjoys a hot and dry climate pretty much all year round. However, morning and nighttime temperatures can drop drastically during the winter months, so it is strongly recommended to visit during the summer. The good news is that the summer starts early in Marrakech (in fact, as early as late April). Average daytime temperatures stay around 20°C between April and early June, and at this time of the year visitors can enjoy more than 8 hours of brilliant sunshine every day. This is also the best time to visit in terms of finding the best deals on flights and accommodation, or you may also want to travel during the shoulder season (September-October).

Where to Stay

Travellers visiting Marrakech will have the opportunity to experience the legendary Moroccan hospitality regardless of their budget. It is possible to find fantastic all inclusive deals at stunning 4-star hotels within walking distance of the city's main square (Djema El Fna). Alternatively, the Gueliz district is a great option if you are looking for cheap hotels that are centrally located. Last but not least, Marrakech's Medina is teeming with beautiful inns and guest houses featuring traditional architecture and a romantic atmosphere.

Attractions & Events

Step into Marrakech's Medina (Old Town) for a journey back in time through labyrinthine alleys, splendid palaces, and artisan workshops. Exploring the Medina could take you days, and this is also the ideal place to learn more about the traditional Moroccan crafts, such as weaving, jewellery making, or leather tanning. Also in the Medina you will find the souks (traditional markets), where you can shop around for spices, silver jewellery, leather goods, pottery, or decorative items such as lanterns and carpets. The public square of Djema El Fna is the symbolic heart of Marrakech, especially during the evenings, where hundreds of food vendors, snake charmers, and story tellers will keep you entertained for hours. Other must sees within the city include the Royal Gardens, the Koutubia mosque, and the Bahia palace. And of course, Moroccan gastronomy is an attraction in its own right: don't leave without sampling a beef tagine or without visiting a traditional bakery. You can also venture further afield with a day trip to the imposing Atlas Mountains, a natural playground where you can go hiking, camel trekking, or go on a 4x4 expedition through the fascinating Moroccan desert – with a dip in the beautiful Ouzoud waterfall included. The local events calendar is packed with interesting things to see and do all year round. Marrakech's most famous event is the International Film Festival, held every year in December. In mid-April, the city streets and public squares host impressive performances by dancers and acrobats -it's the Alwan Art Festival. More music and art performances during the Festival of Popular Arts (July).
