Sustainable tourism is promoted on the island, which takes the form of walking, cycling or riding holidays for which the beautiful, undulating landscape is perfect. There are many sites of archaeological and historical interest, including Cap de Cavalleria, where underwater archaeological sites can be viewed under the supervision of the local Ecomuseum. Divers can visit shipwrecks as well as searching for relics of the Roman Village that existed on the northern coast many centuries ago. The highest point on the island, at the top of Monte Toro, offers the most amazing views as well as a seventeenth century sanctuary, which is inhabited by a community of Franciscan nuns and features a café and gift shop that are well worth the trek.

Whilst this is not as expensive as staying in a luxury hotel on Majorca, it isn’t for those trying to achieve a cheap holiday. More affordable options include the western resorts of Cala Blanca and Cala’n Bosch, which have access to two very family-friendly beaches and are popular with UK tourists, so the food and entertainment is very much geared towards British tastes. Music fans with tastes that run towards the classical or jazz genres are well catered-for in Menorca, with both classical and operatic festivals during the summer season and jazz or blues music well-represented in the island’s clubs and Es Freginal Park in Mahón, as well as with a jazz festival in May. With milder winters than we are accustomed to, Menorca is a good place to book a last minute holiday between Christmas and New Year, or earlier if you’d rather avoid the turkey and egg-nog in favour of freshly-caught fish and local wine.

With similar weather to its near neighbours, Menorca starts to experience a wetter season during October, with sporadic rain continuing until February. However, temperatures during the day seldom drop below 7 degrees even at the coldest times and with a high temperature of somewhere in the mid-teens during the cold season, it’s considerably warmer than the UK during the same period. At the height of summer, from June until late August or September, the climate is very warm and dry, with a breeze that makes the heat feel even more pleasant.
