Holidays to Malta

This archipelago known as the Maltese Islands is made up of three islands, namely Gozo, Comino, and Malta being the largest of them. Both the islands of Gozo and Malta have been occupied for the past 7,000 years. The islands have a long history between them, as well as some distinctive differences. The island is covered with indications of their earlier history with stone temples, a hypogeum, and many ancient handicrafts.

The island of Malta has plenty of wonderful beaches. It is both a sun worshipper’s haven as well as a great spot for those who enjoy water sports and any outdoor activities. The island offers guests a variety of activities from golf and tennis, to horseback riding and skydiving. It is also considered one of the best places in the Mediterranean for scuba diving.

Malta holidays will also include open-air markets, casinos, exquisite local cuisine, traditional wines, and firework displays. Shoppers seeking something authentic should be on the lookout for multicoloured glassware and delicate lace items. For those that enjoy visiting the religious sights, you will have to choose which out of the 364 churches on the island you want to visit.

One attraction that simply should not be missed during your holidays to Malta is St. Agatha’s Catacombs. A natural cave that was discovered under the island’s oldest parish church was converted into a crypt and still holds the remains of numerous graves and galleries. This catacomb is typical of the underground cemeteries of the time. St. John’s Cathedral is a true example of the baroque style and is home to eight chapels. It interior has been hailed as one of the most ornate in the world.

The ancient temples of Malta are some of the oldest standing stone structures in the world. These temples date from 4000 to 2500 BC and are older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge. The temples of Hagar, Mnajdra, Ggantija, Qim, and Tarxien also offer visitors some truly incredible sights.

For a little family adventure during your Malta holidays, be sure to stop by the Popeye Village, which is an entertainment complex and open-air museum. It offers kids of all ages a chance to enjoy rides and shows as well as a place for children to explore the village and meet the characters from the show.

Climate

The Maltese Islands experience a relatively consistent tropical climate where the days are humid, warm, and long. There are no distinct seasons in Malta, so the average daily mean is around 18C / 64F, with monthly highs and lows varying. The cool winter days will see temperatures around 12C / 54F while the summer tends to stay around 31C / 88F. The months of March, and June to August inclusive, are the driest.

Currency

After taking your holidays to Malta, you will be very familiar with the Maltese Lira, which is the country’s local currency.
