Many people do not know very much about Iceland apart from its myths, legends and sagas. It is a modern European country on the edge of the Arctic Circle with amazing scenery. With a whole host of activities to engage in while there, Iceland is a great place to explore while on a cruise.

Iceland, because of its geographic location, is truly the land of the midnight sun during the summer. During June, it hardly gets dark at all. Even in late January when there is barely sunlight for five hours during the day, Iceland remains enticing for the visitor. The Atlantic Gulf Stream ensures winters are milder than you might expect, and the snow-covered landscape is a delight.

As far as the culture of the Icelandic is concerned, it is a mix of modern European and their own traditions. The country, because of its location, was isolated for much of its history. This has led to an insular attitude with regard to such things as food and literature, as well as the arts.

Conservation and water purity was part of Icelandic life long before it became popular in the rest of the western world. Water purity and the land quality are governed by tight regulations and the Icelanders are well ahead of the rest in the production of organic and free-range foods. Iceland believes in food and drink that is pure and untainted.

Iceland has massive fishing stocks and it is hardly surprising that the cod plays a key part in the economy as well as the diet of the country. When eating out in the capital Reykjavik and any of the other towns you can be assured you will be eating only the best of dishes.

The Icelanders like to experiment with their food, blending styles and flavours to ensure the cuisine remains exciting as well as delicious.

One of the delights of a cruise stop-off in Iceland is the chance to view some of the truly amazing scenery and enjoy its physical benefits. This most certainly applies to the country’s hot mineral spas where even on the coldest of Icelandic days you can strip down to your bathing costume and luxuriate in the steamy waters.
